Ida Maria/VV Brown/Bird Pen @ Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh 8.11.08

November 13, 2008 by Helen Newbery · Leave a Comment

With a punishingly early slot, Bird Pen have to work hard to grab the attention of those wandering into the Cabaret Voltaire and lingering at the bar. And work they do, managing to fill the space around them with their huge, atmospheric slabs of sound, which draw in the curious. Read more

Blackfish/Shapes/Chrik/The! Spoon? @ Bar 122, Huddersfield 12.10.08

“We are The! Spoon? (and the), which is less of a band name and more of an attempt at post modernism”. The disappointing turnout at tonight’s gig hasn’t dampened the mood. With spoken word vocals and self proclaimed “post-something-or-other” rock sensibilities The! Spoon? (and the) display an intelligence that is refreshing and exciting to watch.

Whilst making my way to London, via various “Rail Replacement” buses, some thoughts occurred. Firstly, two hours sleep was probably a bad idea. Secondly, if I had wanted to catch a bus, I would have booked one. The reason for the sleep deprivation wasn’t my fault, Erol Alkan tearing up a set in a one hundred and fifty person club in your rather small hometown, is not a spectacle to miss. Read more

London Freeze Festival at Battersea Power Station

October 25, 2008 by David Macnamara · Leave a Comment

Set in the shadow of the unmistakable Battersea Power Station, on the south bank of the Thames, Freeze Festival offers a somewhat odd marriage between winter ski sports and music. The first night of the festival is an indie-pop affair with The Enemy headlining the main tent, in what can only be described as post-industrial wasteland. Read more

Of recent years the Bunnymen have played small venues, which some may say make it difficult to squeeze Ian McCulloch’s ego into, but tonight they are back where they belong in the magnificent splendor of the Royal Albert Hall. Read more

Freaky Weasel Promotions Presents
No Signal Input, In a Furious Death Bed
Friday 12th September
East Durham College

When you go to a local gig, you think its going to be some half-arsed show with cheap drinks. You know the kind where you turn up and no one really knows what’s going on, and the band are still sound-checking after your 8th pint?

Deerhunter/Seabear/Screaming Weirdos @ Boston Arms

September 14, 2008 by Mark Rowden · 2 Comments

Tuffnel Park’s Boston Arms is throbbing with what sounds like a dissonant Pelican-like post-rock when I walk inside. That’d be excellent, if only it wasn’t channelled through the woodwind instruments of a bastardised shopping centre native-American band. That’s what my impression of Starving Weirdoes is. Is it avante-garde? Experimental? Whatever it is, it sounds improvised and directionless. If only they’d consolidated that nice little tambourine beat into something.
