Interview: Whiskycats

If a ‘Whisky Cat Cocktail’ existed, it would most likely contain a dash of indie, a slice of jazz, and two shorts of Latino. With a funk umbrella, probably. We interviewed lead singer Matthew Whitaker at one of their gigs at The Atrium, Leeds. Read more
Reverend & The Makers @ Academy 2, Manchester

There’s just no denying that Reverend and the Makers are a shit hot band. Near weekly features in NME, a top ten radio hit, and sold out gigs all across the UK are evidence enough of that. But while they may be enjoying band-of-the-moment status, it would be a mistake to think that that’s all they are. Their irresistibly funky electro-pop sets Reverend and the Makers apart from the pack, and with a frontman as compelling as Jon McClure, this is one band with more staying power than super glue. The Acute @ Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh

I’d been intrigued by three-piece The Acute ever since they managed to plaster the entire T in the Park festival site with posters for their Unsigned Tent performance in 2006, and my interest was piqued by the sight of waifish singer Stuart as he took to the stage wearing black glitter obscuring half his face and one of those not-cardigans that just cover his arms. There’s a short description for a band like this. I don’t yet know it, but I can guess. This band, I would say, is sure to hit the charts very very soon. The Indie factor is full of energetic riffs, bar chords and chromatic scales played at a timing that has not yet been created. And the dance is quite simply, music that you can dance to. Great, Isn’t it?! Read more
The French Revolution

Fuck Marie Antoinette, the guillotine and all that historical bullshit, where the real french revolution will be found is in electronic music! From SebastiAn and Justice literally taking over dance music, to Daft Punk transforming Kanye West (who is, as stated elsewhere ” a knob”) from a good hip-hop artist with a rather inflated ego into an outright genius, the French Revolution is fully in swing. Whiskycats - Whiskycats

Oh, how it could’ve turned out different. After three years on the road with a seemingly ever changing line up, a relaxed attitude to recording an album and no sign of available funding even if they wanted to make one, for a short while it looked like this album wasn’t going to see the light of day. Air Traffic @ The Cockpit, Leeds

The first band up, Sonic Hearts, were an absolute shocker for me. I thought with a name like that, they can’ be good. Turned out, they we’re as good as I thought they wouldn’t be (understand?). They were a cross between The Coral and The View - there was no clear genre to describe this band. Read more

Whiskycats @ The Roadhouse, Manchester
July 14, 2007 by Kane Fulton · Leave a Comment
Manchester’s Roadhouse club is a suitable venue for tonight’s album launch with it’s modest, if somewhat dingy interior echoing the dishevelled appearance worn by some members of headliners Whisky Cats. Read more
The Who - ‘Then’ and ‘Now’ (64-67)

Funnily enough, I was only thinking the other day, that what this world needs is another Who compilation! Was I really you ask? No, you muppet, ‘course I wasn’t! There are mounds of them around already all with the best songs from one of the most important and influential British bands of all time and arguably the best live band in the history of rock.
