DVD Review: Wall-E

October 1, 2008 by Paul Connor

The latest Disney instalment is a strange one indeed.

Usually in a Disney flick, the world in which its set is peaceful, picturesque and thanks to the Pixar graphics, a darn good spectacle! Sure there’s the odd bit of tragedy thrown in now and then, a parent is lost, a son or a toy goes missing, but it all resolves itself in a pretty standard way.Now Wall-E, set 700 years in the future, when we the human race have used up all our natural resources, left the planet full of our garbage, and are now floating around in space having everything done for us, which has left every single human - well, obese!

Ok kids, maybe just a slightly stranger concept thought up by the writers at Disney than usual?
NO, IT’S A HORRIBLE GLIMPSE INTO YOUR MOST PROBABLE FUTURE!

Luckily there’s our hero Wall-E, the only robot on his cleaning mission of Earth who hasn’t broken down yet. His only glitch is that he’s developed a personality, a love for things you might find at a car-boot sale, and a slight obsession for 1960’s musical theatre.

He is all alone until he is joined by a shiny i-pod-esque robot, Eve.

There are the necessary moments of animated peril that are thrown into the mix, standard for a Disney flick. However, it’s plain to anyone over the age of six that there’s a message about our modern lifestyle running throughout the film. It certainly seems Disney has gone ‘all political on our asses’ with this one!

The film is at its best when it focuses on Wall-E’s attempts to woo the female gadget, and that’s what the film essentially is - a love story.

- And it was absolutely perfect.
