Apparently, Wakefield’s The Labels were born on a cold, boozy night in the November of 2003 when Sam, Ves and Slee decided they were tired with what they were hearing on the local music scene and so decided to form a band. Their Myspace states that they sound like ‘Marzipan on Toast’. We interviewed The Label’s guitarist Sam.
AS: How long ago did you guys form and how did you meet?
Sam: Me, Christian, Matt and Jonni were in the same year at school and we met Shay through my brother who was the same age as her. It’s been us 5 for the last 6 months
AS: Who’s idea was it to make a band?
S: Me, Christian and Matt formed the band to relieve the boredom after we’d finished school.
AS: Who are your 5 main influences that inspired you to form a band?
S: We like all sorts of music so it’d be hard to pin it down to just 5 that have inspired us, we all have very different tastes.
AS: Are you interested in record deals or are just playing for fun?
S: At the moment it’s just for fun, we just really enjoy what we’re doing but we do eventually want to release something.
AS: How do you write songs, do you all sit down and make one together, or do you write what comes to your head their and then wherever you are?
S: Usually I’ll come up with the basic structure or idea and then I’ll take it to the rest of the band and well all work on it together adding parts taking parts out, and then organize the structure.
AS: Before a gig do you have any rituals or routines to prepare?
S: No not really, we just try and have a laugh and a few beers.
AS: Do you feel more nervous or excited before a gig?
S: I used to get really nervous but now it’s just excitement to get on and play in front of people. That’s my favourite part of being in a band.
AS: Are their any plans for a CD of any sort?
S: We have some CDs with tracks that we’ve demoed on them which we give away at gigs. (At the moment I’m not really allowed to talk about our plans, though we are in talks with a company.)
AS: Finally it’s hard to decide between “down the drainpipe” or “we were good together” as been my favourite Labels song, what would you say is your bands best song?
S: I think that our best song is either ‘Let’s Go Get Paid’ (which we open gigs with) or ‘Opposite of Wrong’, they are my two current favourites. I change my mind all the time about which is my favourite song, ‘Down the Drainpipe’ and ‘We Were Good’ are both highlights of the set though. We seem to have got to a stage where all of our songs fit really nicely together when we play them. After July we’re going to take some time off from gigging and right a load more songs though.
