  • X-Ray Horse is the second of three new indie-rock nights organised and run by Tom Hudson of The Dead Delta (formerly The Chartists) and Emil Kazounis, with help from the guys from the Stockroom.

Featuring up-and-coming bands and DJ acts, these events are described by their creators as ‘Sheffield-based sonic experiences, intended to shock the brain into full vigour.’ X-Ray Horse 1 went down a storm, and a packed house saw Sheffield neo-grunge rockers The Violet May wreck the furnishings. So, can X-Ray Horse 2 live up to the high expectations of the eagerly awaiting Sheffield indie scene?

First blood is drawn by local glam-pop-rockers Party Horse, who kick the night off with a distinct 80s style, parading bouffant hair, boater hats and Adam and the Ants makeup. The band play an eclectic set featuring strong elements of 70s retro, 80s electro and noughties rock. The Sheffield duo leave the crowd slightly confused as to which decade they’re in, but also in high spirits and keen anticipation of the next act.

In the wake of Party Horse come nautically-named second act The Sea. Another band displaying a wide spectrum of musical influences including BRMC, RATM and Led Zeppelin. Their sound is imbibed with a soulful blues flavour that resonates around the heaving, fairy-lit venue and has the earlier, somewhat tentative audience completely absorbed.

The headline spot is filled by Nuneaton’s finest scuzzy electro punks, Youves. The fresh-faced band begin in a frenzy of cowbell and cacophonous guitar over a samba-like drumbeat. Bar-flies stir from their pints and edge towards the stage as the Rapture-esque rockers rapidly shed layers of clothing and blast out a vibrant set tinged with touches of Hot Hot Heat and Art Brut. Despite their clear influences, Youves have a unique sound that has the audience dancing as manically as they are. The party goes on well into the night with a selection of local djs, including the X-Ray boys, dropping techno, glam rock , soul and bleep until the early hours, leaving the Stockroom crowd impatiently anticipating X-Ray Horse 3.

The third X-Ray Horse will happen on 5th September, where a compilation featuring bands from this rock and roll trilogy will be released. Sheffield experimental hip-hoppers Legend of the 7 Black Tentacles are already booked for the event. Watch this space for other exciting acts to be confirmed – this is a night not to be missed.
