The Pigeon Detectives @ Leeds Met University

February 25, 2007 by Tom Whitehouse

Just over a year ago this young Yorkshire rabble were playing in some of the dingiest venues imaginable to an average crowd of around twenty-five people. Now, with very little promotion they have had a Top 40 single, supported fellow tykes Kasier Chief’s and are just coming to the end of a fully sold-out headline tour where they’ve played to crowds in excess of a thousand people each night. Not a bad years work, eh?

Rothwell’s finest burst on to the stage to a rapturous response. The hometown crowd continually bellows out ‘YOOORRRRKSHIRE! YOOORRRRKSHIRE! YOOORRRRKSHIRE!’ The chants seem to continue to increase in volume and velocity, since they was launched out over twenty minutes prior to the Leeds quintet rolling through the stage door.

Lead singer Matt Bowman swaggers on to the stage with a confident aura with almost a hint of cockiness in tow. He has ‘LS26′ proudly branded across his chest signaling to the local faithful that he hasn’t forgotten his roots now his band’s on the brink of making the big-time. As he makes his way to the mic he spits out ‘Alright Leeds’ in his broad Yorkshire accent, then the opening song kicks into action. The beefy bassline of second single ‘You Know I Love You punctures the monstrous amps. The heart of Leeds erupts. Utter chaos commences. By the time crowd favourite ‘I Found Out’ ends, the security staff propping up the barrier are inundated with crowd-surfers.A few songs in and the catchy-as-ever ‘Don’t Know How To Say Goodbye’ and its thrashing guitars sends shockwaves through the venue. The crowds continued enthusiasm seems to spur on the erratic front man even more as he climbs the speaker stack. He then jumps back down and returns to his trademark mic-spinning antics. The next song is ‘Caught In Your Trap’ and beforehand he announces ‘This one’s for the ladies’. Some members of the crowd respond by throwing their bras at the singer.

For the only time of the night he momentarily pauses as a smirk appears on his face. A second later and hes back hurling himself in the air kicking out his outstretched legs. The set’s almost over as Bowman exclaims ‘We’re The Pigeon Detectives, we don’t do encores, so this really is the last song’, he then screamed out his familiar phrase ‘Lets ‘ave it Leeds!’ Then the first chords to the popular ‘I’m Not Sorry’ are flung out. The emphatic crowd sings word for word. The song approaches the second chorus and he throttles his exhausted body over the security and the barrier into the front rows of the happily-receiving crowd. The bruising bald security guards fight to drag him back out of the melee. The band serenade the front rows with cans of Stella and bottles of water before walking off as energetic as they came on.
