Das Wanderlust - Sunday School
May 28, 2007 by Martin Kendrick
Those marmite pair of wrong poppers are back with three more offerings sure to split opinions quicker than Moses with a bowl of washing up water. But love them or hate them (and quite frankly, you really should love them because their insanely brilliant!) you can’t deny they make music like pretty much no one else and that’s always a good thing!A-side ‘Sunday School’ sounds like two little kids jumping round a room after getting a toy drum kit and battery powered keyboard. Lovably eccentric and full of crazy fun ’ even a recorder at the end! Indie pop doesn’t get any more pure adoringly enjoyable than this, two of the most inexplicably cool minutes of musical madness this side of the Mighty Boosh.
The first of a generous helping of two b-sides ‘Humbug’ opens like a nutter walking down the street humming to her headphones, before the explosion into the arty punk rifferarma and eerie organ noises. Laura Simmons is in fine operatic form bellowing the la la la’s like her life depended on it. One of those songs perfect for getting pissed and having a good old head bang to, you’ll look like a muppet, but it’ll be bloody good fun.
The final instalment of the trilogy, the fabulously titled ‘Supermarkets vs. Greengrocers’ is computer punk like To My Boy meeting The Fall for a jam in a sweetshop. Pogoing was invented for songs like this, get a trampoline ready when you put it on and bounce up and down till you end up on the roof!
Das Wanderlust are that feeling when your seven years old and you go to the theme park, hyper after eating your body weight in candy floss, running round like a whippet bottled and pressed into vinyl. Three of the most physically and sensually enjoyable sticks of indie pop seaside rock youll ever have the pleasure of sucking! Wooo hooo!!
