The Caulfield Sisters - Some Candy Talking
April 8, 2007 by Martin Kendrick
Very cool US indie label American Laundromat Records release a limited edition transparent blue vinyl (beautiful it is to) to showcase two of their brightest new talents. The two-track single has one song from each artist, both of which are covers. The A side is a live version of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s ‘Some Candy Talking’ by trendy Brooklyn, all girl three piece The Caulfield Sisters. A raw and passionate performance, dreamy and heavily atmospheric. Like the Pixies meets The Raincoats and Nico, heavenly shoegazing. Definitely a band with a part to play in the already excellent New York indie scene.
The flip side is multi-talented French songstress Julie Peel covering The Breeders ‘Divine Hammer’. Sounding not to different from Kim Deal herself, Peel offers a slightly more stripped back, natural take on this straight to the point, alternative pop song. Sprightly guitars and simple, ridged drums over the driving punk baseline make for perfect sub three minute powerpop, performed effortlessly by a very promising and original artist.
