Vampire Weekend - A-Punk
February 25, 2008 by Justin
If the hyperbole surrounding the release of Vampire Weekend’s debut album left some, myself included feeling a little flat upon actually hearing the record then the release of ‘A-Punk’ as a single should rekindle the sparks that initially lit many-a-blogger’s blue touchpaper.
Where parts of the album veered dangerously towards a smug, Ralph Lauren Polo Shirt version of college rock, ‘A-Punk’ is a 150/mph tear through the fabric of their Ivy League image. Ezra Koenig’s yelps draw inevitable Comparisons to NYC contemporaries The Walkmen but their Afro-Beat drums and Pan Pipe keyboard effects indicate Vampire Weekend have much more to offer than imitation. The question is, can they keep it up? Let’s hope so.
