Nephu Huzzband - Should Have Used An Abacus

September 21, 2008 by Stacy Reeve

Fusing elements of the past with the quirkiness of life in the noughtie’s Nephu Huzzband’s third single release leaves you experiencing the sultry epitome of Robert Smith and the saturated sound of indie that is often found penetrating our ear canals, all combined in one neat little package comprising of two pint-sized songs.

Opening track ‘Should Have Used An Abacus’ provides staggered guitars and thrashing drums, persuading you to enter a melacholy world of sadness and depression…well, not quite. But the jaunty riff of the strings and the ferocious beat of the drums are almost fighting in competition to gain acceptance; perhaps a sign of teenage rebellion and angst that had been longing to explode. So who wins? In fact, none. It’s the vocals of lead singer Tom Bentley that makes the strums and beats sound like a mere murmur on the horizon; his unique voice is a potion of capabilities ranging from singing, shrieking and droning.

It’s the type of singing your Mother would find ‘ghastly’ and in a way it is but on the otherhand it works. What also works is the richer sound of ‘Clockwork’, the second track on the single which flourishes into an epic solo by the guitar in which the drums have to make an appearance. Yet in this track the two sounds coalesce in matrimony, finishing as soon as they started; as abruptly and harshly as the tone of Bentley’s voice.
