Nephu Huzzband - Nurse! Nurse!

October 8, 2008 by Mark Gibbs

This new single from Nottingham’s post-punk indie rockers “Nephu Huzzband” comes complete with air-tight jolts of indie-disco drumming setting the backdrop for deliciously angular, Fugazi-esque lead guitar lines and shouted vocals to mould into what could easily become the 21st century’s response to New Order.

The opening A side to this single, Nurse! Nurse! comes in at a truely baffling 1:32! Within this time frame however, nothing has been lost in the cut. From the opening Youthmovies style guitar lines to the final echoing shout from gang vocalists Tom Bentley, Adam Popple and Jamie Barrow, this record showcases the degree of talent on show amongst this still young and upcomming band.

The second track manages a more substantial 4:11, and taking it’s name from a line out of “The Wizard of Oz”, ‘Lions, Tigers & Bears’ delivers a more delicate side to the band’s repertoire, offering up arpeggio guitars atop riding snare rhythms and simple bass lines that complement each other perfectly.

The final track of the single offers a slightly extended; that is, to 2:36, version of the title track. One begins to question as to just why this version was included, or indeed, why this wasn’t the final released version, as within this track all that can be seen as different is that it includes what is practically an extra repeat of the entire song, and nothing else worthy of commentary.

This single shows great promise on behalf of a band that im sure will attract a strong following in the not too distant future if this piece of 80s inspired, Cure-meets-New Order record is anything to go by.
