The Nightjars - Towards Light
October 6, 2008 by Helen Newbery
“Towards Light” is the debut EP from Manchester-based The Nightjars. Although opener “You Set Me Reeling” is a pleasant enough jangly number, the lyrics are perhaps more prescient than the band realise, as singer Ollie intones “I’m nothing special”. As the EP progresses, it’s clear that it’s all a bit indie-by-numbers.
“Stay Focused” is, however, a bit more promising, with its melancholic guitar intro pricking up the ears before Ollie’s voice kicks in, and the changes of tempo mean that this is the most interesting track on the EP. Sadly, things go somewhat downhill from here, with the remainder of the tracks being largely forgettable, and by “NMDA” they have sunk into lyrical banality: “I’m in love with this city / my girlfriend’s so pretty”, anyone?
Although closer “Bass Drum” does indeed do some interesting things with drums at the start, it quickly settles into the familiar pattern of the rest of the EP. Overall, this has the feel of an admittedly proficient band who decided they quite fancied having an EP out, rather than having any kind of vision to fulfil or indeed memorable tunes. Nice artwork, mind.
