Gossamer Albatross - The Ground Will Take Us Down 7″

November 9, 2008 by Richard James

There can’t be many indie-folk (for want of a better phrase) artists in the world today who knew that they wanted to be indie-folk megastars from the age of 18 but Lewis Gordon knows exactly that- and you can feel it, in his urgent delivery, his essential furious guitar strums - this is clearly a band with passion.

The Ground Will Take Us Down is perfect example of what GA are about: Reuben Brunt and Sam Little’s carefully arranged flourishing violin Final Fantasy-esque string lines, rhythmic acoustic guitar strums, Lewis’ dynamic vocals displaying narrative lyrics songwriters twice his age would cut their arms off to write and a twisting structure, oh the structure! The bands loud-soft dynamic is on form from the spiraling sweetly sung opening lines via pizzicato strings to the shouted bridge with massive chants of ‘This time it’s different!’, the bands gang vocals more emotive than Obama’s election speech.

Recorded by Hugo Manuel (of Jonquil) in his flat the 7″ has a homemade charm, aided no end by the delicate artwork and the care put into the release by Bailwick Records make for a delectable debut “7 from both band and label. B-side ‘Elizabeth, Queen of the Sea’ displays the bands more delicate side with a tale of shipwrecked lovers, with ocean-like depth and absorbing lyrics.

With the evolution from a four piece to a full band, future recordings with nu-folk darling Jeremy Warmsley and many, many years of hard touring to look forward to, the future’s bright for these young upstarts.
