The Verve - Love Is Noise

July 6, 2008 by Joel Beighton

The most famous Wiganers, The Verve  after George Formby Jr., are finally back with their latest single ‘Love Is Noise’During the ten years’absence of a new single, Richard Ashcroft has had three solo albums, The Libertines have come, and gone. And the country have adopted a new ‘favourite’ British rock band in the Arctic Monkeys. But, regardless of all this there is still something brilliant about The Verve.

Hearing their new single, ‘Love Is Noise’, for the first time on television during their Glastonbury set this year, it was easy to see that the song has the potential to be a massive hit for the band. The band also have faith in the song, placing it last on the set list over ‘Bittersweet Symphony’.

However, if you’re expecting a typical Verve sound then you’ll be surprised with the new song. ‘Love Is Noise’ shares more similarities with Richard Ashcroft’s solo work, rather than the ‘shoe gazing’ sound that many of the band’s songs had in the 1990’s. Their latest hit however, does appear to be a succesful transition from their early Britpop roots, to mature rock & roll stars. The upbeat loop over, throughout the song gives a modern twist, whilst Ashcroft’s insightful lyrics provide a mature edge. All of this makes the 10 years wait just about worth it.

y’see I thought this a real stinker on record, those monkey noises just sound tacked on and horrible; yet watching it at Glasto it sounded absolutely massive…so I’m pretty undecided! Maybe if they’d opened up the production out a bit, no denying its going to remain a live favourite though

I wasn’t too keen on this when I heard it on t’radio. Any idea if there’s any footage of their Glastonbury set kicking about?

  3. Andrew Hill says:

Yes definitely. It could possibly be that its not actually a very good song, but the atmosphere of Glastonbury meant that didn’t matter. Hopefully the album version has different production.
