Inspired by a heady mix of techno and psychedelic fuzz, it’s
obvious that Autocolt know exactly how to conjure up
a tune that aims to prise open any inhibitions. From the
very start the pounding temperament of ‘The Serpine’ swells
like an infectious disease, cultivating the listener into a
state of much appreciated dependency. As the beat pummels
away like some smutty sex pest the click clack of the drum
machine merely acts as a fumble in the dark, only to be
sealed off with a harsh yet satisfying abrupt ending.
‘Resonator’ ups the tempo, but the cloud of guitar fuzz
still lingers. However, this time the cunning use of
acoustic guitar is the primary feature and at times one
could be forgiven for detecting flickers of recent
Radiohead. That is until half way through when the listener
almost feels as though they’ve been teleported slap-bang
into a severe intergalactic war. Sporadic showers of bleeps
prove its outer space mentality and coupled with a shady
sense of urgency ‘Resonator’ is an intense encounter that
would be welcomed time and time again.
At the tender age of 20 these three southern based lads have
undoubtedly got what it takes to impress the best of both
musical worlds. Clammy raves and grubby indie establishments
up and down the country will mutually and almost certainly
embrace Autocolt with open arms. However, the one thing that
has to be noted is that without any lyrical content it’s
difficult to speculate how Autocolt aim to develop and at
times is seems as though this is just what’s missing. Never
the less it is impressive to hear such self-belief and
attitude and at such a young age these boys have plenty of
time in order to progress and become more adept.
