Some delightfully eccentric Pavement-esque alt folk from a boy / girl duo from up Nottingham way. Slow Club’s debut single could be a Deep South barn dance anthem, just as easily as an indie club classic. Lyrically bizarre and heart-warmingly humorous, ‘there’s people in the floorboards send a mouse’. Tongue in cheekily dark, declaring, ‘it’s too late because we’re dead’ with big grins on their faces, strumming jolly chords.Their voices harmonise beautifully and bounce off each other in such a way that makes the whole thing so much more interesting and enjoyable. It gives the songs layers - very similar to the way Blood Red Shoes use each other’s dynamic to build their songs. ‘Because We’re Dead’ is one of those songs you can’t help but fall in love with.
B-side ‘Sunday’ sees Charles and Rebecca taking the pace down, lighting the candles and breaking out the mandolin. More subtle lyrically with more traditional use of dueting and classic country folk vibe. The soundtrack to lazing in the park on a summer’s afternoon. The song talks of one of those days where everything that can go wrong, does go wrong ’ but at the end of the day, you’ve always got someone to plod back home to. We all love a happy ending and this has a perfect one, ‘no one owns the sea except you and me’. Don’t ya just love ‘em! Slow Club are a bit like your favourite childhood teddy bear, you want to keep them all to yourself and give them a big hug when your feeling down. Music to warm your cockles like a cup-a-soup, just lovely.
